Core 1: Nanoparticle and Biospecimen Standardization

Investigators:

PI: Shuming Nie, Ph.D.
Co-Investigator: Z.L. Wang, Ph.D., Andrew N. Young, M.D., Ph.D., Ryan Jowers, B.A.

This is an expanded core to meet the needs in nanotechnology development, standardization, data and materials sharing. The new core director is Dr. Nie, with support from Mr. Jowers, Dr. Young, and Dr. Z. Wang. The main functions of this core are (1) to synthesize and characterize several classes of nanoparticles including quantum dots, surface-enhanced Raman nanotags, iron oxide nanocrystals, and polymeric nanoparticles; (2) to evaluate, standardize, and distribute these particles to center investigators; (3) to collect and prepare cellular and tissue specimens for nanotechnology applications; (4) to interface with the NCI Nanotechnology Characterization Lab (NCL) for preclinical and toxicology studies; and (5) to share nanoparticle agents and biospecimens with other investigators in the NCI nano-alliance and the broader scientific community.
