Dong M. Shin, M.D.

Professor of Hematology and Oncology, Medicine, Otolaryngology, and Pharmacology

Dong M. Shin, M.D. joined the Winship Cancer Institute at Emory University as Professor of Hematology and Oncology, Medicine, Otolaryngology, and Pharmacology. He will serve as Director of the Clinical and Translational Cancer Prevention Program, and Deputy Director of the Translational Aerodigestive Track Malignancies Program.

Dr. Shin earned his medical degree from Yonsei University, College of Medicine in Seoul, Korea. He completed his internship and residency of Internal Medicine at Cook County Hospital, Chicago, Illinois. He then completed a fellowship in Hematology and Medical Oncology at the University of Texas M.D. Anderson Cancer Center, Houston. He is certified by the American Board of Internal Medicine in Internal Medicine and Medical Oncology, and is a Fellow of the American College of Physicians, a Fellow of the American Society of Head and Neck Surgery, and an active member of the American Association for Cancer Research, and the American Society of Clinical Oncology.

Dr. Shin's clinical interests include treatment and prevention of head and neck cancer, lung cancer, thymoma and mesothelioma. His laboratory research has focused on the following areas: Establishing a carcinogenesis model in preclinical and clinical settings for head, neck and lung cancer; developing biomarkers in animal and human carcinogenesis for head, neck and lung cancer; developing molecular targeted prevention and therapies using interferons, retinoids, epidermal growth factor receptor (EGFR) signaling pathways (i.e., EGFR monoclonal antibodies, EGFR tyrosine kinase inhibitors) COX-2 inhibitors and other molecular targeted molecules; and developing novel therapeutics and preventive strategies (clinical or translational protocols) for head, neck, and lung cancer, thymoma and mesothelioma. Dr. Shin is the recipient of numerous awards and author of more than 150 peer-reviewed articles, book chapters and books.
