M. Neale Weitzmann Ph.D. Assistant Professor of Medicine, Division of Endocrinology, Emory University Dr. Weitzmann joined the Division of Endocrinology, Metabolism and Lipids at Emory in 2003 as an Assistant Professor of Medicine and Associate Director of the Bone Laboratory. His primary area of expertise is in bone biology. Among the clinical manifestations of estrogen deficiency (postmenopausal osteoporosis), inflammatory autoimmune diseases (rheumatoid arthritis and periodontitis) and metastatic bone cancer, is accelerated bone turnover, typically leading to reduced bone integrity and ultimately fracture. The mechanisms driving altered bone turnover in these debilitating maladies are poorly understood, as is the processes that regulate basal physiological bone turnover. Dr. Weitzmann's laboratory focuses on the role of the immune system, both T cells and B cells, and the cytokines they secrete, or that affect their function, in the regulation of both physiological and pathological bone turnover.
